KENYA:Uhuru Set to Visit Moi Referral Hospital

January 2014 TheStar; President Uhuru Kenyatta will visit the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to assess medical facilities at the institution and attend World Cancer Day Celebrations.

Plans are underway to host Uhuru at the hospital next Tuesday.He will address a public meeting at the Eldoret Sports Club.

“We will have lined up several events ahead of the main day,” said hospital CEO John Kibosia. Uhuru will be accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto to assess the ongoing construction of the Cancer and Heart unit at the hospital.

The unit is expected to cost more than Sh1 billion for completion by the end of this year.The hospital is set to undergo major expansion programmes to be funded by the Chinese government at a cost of more than Sh 17 Billion.

The main plan is to put up a new in-patient wing at the hospital with 1,000 beds. It will increase the bed capacity of the hospital from the current 800 to 1,800. “We will have many other projects as part of the expansion and we are still in the process of negotiating with the donor so that the projects can kick off soon,” said Kibosia who was speaking at his office yesterday.

The government has also set aside 200 acres of land near the Prisons in Eldoret where a new wing of the hospital will also be put up at another cost of Sh 20 Billion.Its planned that a new Pyschatric Hospital and Hostels for Moi University Medical Students will be put up at the new site among other facilities.

A complete new plan for the hospital including modern roads in the facility is being discused by experts. Kibosia said there were considerations to put up a special Women Hospital among other key facilities.

The Chinese government was involved in putting up the first phase of the hospital at a cost of Sh 3 Billion more than ten years ago.
