April 2013 The Observer; The Katikkiro of Buganda, John Baptist Walusimbi, yesterday officially opened the free immunization and treatment campaign at the Kabaka’s palace (Lubiri-Mengo) to formally start a week of celebrations to mark Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi’s 58th birthday festivities. The campaign follows an invitation from the Kabaka to hospitals to offer free immunization and treatment to his people. Participating organisations include Mengo hospital, Kampala International hospital, Mukwaya General Clinic, Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG) and the Aids Information Centre. The Katikkiro invited the public to use the services availed.
“All people in the country should use this chance to be treated,” the Katikkiro said. “Only a few have come here today yet the Kabaka has very many people who are sick in Buganda.”
He reminded those attending that the drugs would also be offered free of charge for any diagnosis made. Buganda’s health minister, Nelson Kawalya, said the Kabaka had expressed the wish to ensure the kingdom’s subjects die of old age not diseases.
“We are willing to treat all diseases and all those who are unable to be treated here will be referred to various hospitals and treated free of charge still, “he said.
Kawalya added that the campaign is running in 16 of the kingdom’s 18 counties. Only Mawogola and Kabula counties are not participating due to the high cost of transporting health workers there.
However, Kawalya assured residents there that the campaign would continue in Mawogola and Kabula after the formal end of the celebrations. The drive, which ends on Friday, registered 436 on the first day.
