TANZANIA:Health Workers Establish Trade Union

May 2013 DailyNews; In their quest to improve their welfare, health practitioners in the country have formed a trade union, Tanzania Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Workers’ Union (TMDPWU), to represent health workers in public and private sectors.

Its founders said the association would seek to create harmony among members and also act as a go-between in case of conflicts between medical workers and their employers.

A statement issued by the TMDPWU interim deputy chairman, Dr David Mwenesano, said the association was registered by the Registrar of Trade Unions and Employers’ Organizsations on January 28, this year.

“During a meeting of the Medical Association of Tanzania (MAT) held on August 23, 2011 and in subsequent meetings, it was agreed that a trade union to protect the interests of health workers be formed,” Dr Mwenesano said.

He said the association would be charged with safeguarding the well-being of health practitioners and the general improvement of the health sector with a view to improved medical services for the people.

To have its headquarters in Mwanza city, the association believes that provision of health services is a right which should be enjoyed by all Tanzanians at affordable cost.

The association would also make a close follow-up on the enforcement of laws and regulations pertaining to the health sector and propose alternative measures where it deemed fit.
