Pay rise for 5,000 KNH employees on SRC nod

October 2020 BusinessDaily; The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has approved a Sh203 million new salary structure for Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), paving the way for a pay rise for over 5,000 workers.

The SRC says it has finalised the special job re-evaluation for the roles at East Africa’s biggest referral hospital after the workers downed their tools last month demanding improved salaries and allowances after KNH upgrade to parastatal status from 3C to 7A category by the State Corporations Advisory Committee (SCAC).

“SRC approved and hereby advises on the special job re-evaluation basic salary structure for KNH with an annual average cost implication of Sh203 million with effect from July 1, 2020,” the commission said in a letter dated October 21 and copied to Health principal secretary Susan Mochache.

The SRC said the implementation of the new basic salary structure will cover the period 2017/18 to 2019/20 remuneration review cycle and will form the baseline for 2021/22 to 2024/25 remuneration review cycle.

“The basic salary structure shall form the basis for the management of KNH to negotiate with the three trade unions that represent workers in KNH, with a collective bargaining framework which shall be concluded and registered in the Employment and Labour Relations Court for implementation,” Ms Anne Gitau, the commission secretary said in the advisory.

Under the new structure, KNH chief executive officer will retain the current basic salary of a minimum of Sh395,386 rising to a maximum of Sh560,000 in the current review cycle.
